The Saudi Railway Company and Ericsson partnered through a Memorandum of Understanding that focuses on the transformation of the railway infrastructure in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They will deploy high-speed ‘mission critical’ 5G networks.

The firms will validate use cases such as train operation, internal communications, and Internet of Things (IoT). The low latency and high data rate of 5G make it capable of supporting real-time video, predictive maintenance, and quick passenger Wi-Fi.

As part of the deal, Ericsson will develop Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) technology, which will boost efficient operation. The technology will help the SAR absorb data-driven tools that will provide a resilient network and optimal train schedules.

Saudi Railway Company Supports Vision 2030 Through Innovation

This partnership directly corresponds with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy outlined in the plan Vision 2030. The project will also contribute to improving the positioning of Saudi Arabia among global logistics platforms by creating intelligent, safe, and interconnected transportation networks.

Ericsson will also set up an innovation lab as well as training programs for local engineers together with SAR. The purpose of this move is to train local professionals in FRMCS and 5G technologies.
