Saudi Arabian Railways Expands Fleet with New High-Speed Trains
08.10.2024
Saudi Arabian Railways (SAR) has announced plans to significantly expand its rolling stock fleet by purchasing 15 new high-speed trains. These trains will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h and are intended for use on the North-South route, one of the key rail lines in the country, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The route connects the capital, Riyadh, to the city of Al-Haditha near the Jordanian border. Currently, high-speed trains produced by CAF and powerful EMD SD70ACS locomotives operate on this line.

SAR has already sent out a request to the world’s leading manufacturers for the supply of the new trains. Each train will consist of seven cars, including two motor cars and five intermediate cars. Additionally, eight reserve motor cars will be purchased as part of the contract.
This decision aims to increase the reliability of the transport system and minimize potential service disruptions. The trains will be serviced over a 10-year period and must be equipped to handle extreme heat conditions typical of the region.
High-Speed Trains to Enhance Saudi Arabia’s Transport Infrastructure
The North-South route plays a crucial role in Saudi Arabia’s transport infrastructure. The network, spanning 2,750 km, connects important cities and serves as a vital logistics corridor for freight transport.
The new high-speed trains will improve connections between regions and accelerate passenger transport, a critical need given the country’s rapidly growing population and ongoing infrastructure development.
The introduction of modern high-speed trains also supports environmentally sustainable development. The cutting-edge technologies used in the new trains will help reduce carbon emissions and improve environmental conditions.
Saudi Arabian Railways is actively promoting green solutions as it seeks to build a more sustainable transport system.
Increasing the Capacity of the North-South Route
The purchase of new trains will not only boost the capacity of the North-South route but also enhance the passenger experience. Each train will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies to ensure comfort during travel.
These high-speed trains will be a key element in Saudi Arabia’s strategy to modernize its transport system, supporting the country’s ambitious Vision 2030 program.
Overall, SAR’s acquisition of new high-speed trains will strengthen Saudi Arabia’s position in the transport sector, improve passenger services, and contribute to sustainable development.
