The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has begun the next phase of its Train Control Upgrade Project. This phase focuses on deploying a communications-based train control (CBTC) system across the 71-mile Muni Metro network.

Supplied by Hitachi Rail GTS USA, the CBTC system ensures real-time data exchange between trains and central command. It improves operational accuracy and enables closer train spacing on both surface and subway routes.

San Francisco expects this upgrade to increase service capacity by up to 20% while reducing delays and improving rider satisfaction. The new system also enhances overall traffic flow and network resilience.

San Francisco Taps Local and Global Expertise

To oversee the program, San Francisco enlisted a joint venture between global consultancy WSP and local firm PGH Wong. Their scope includes planning, engineering, and post-implementation support.

WSP brings international transit expertise, while PGH Wong contributes local infrastructure knowledge. Together, they aim to manage risks, ensure accountability, and maintain a clear project vision from start to finish.

Dan Howard, the project manager for TCUP, described the initiative as a generational leap in transit technology. He emphasized the team’s strong focus on risk mitigation and praised the joint venture’s deep technical insight.

Next Steps for San Francisco’s Metro Upgrade

Hitachi Rail will implement the CBTC system in phases, limiting service disruption during the transition. San Francisco plans to activate the new system for passengers between 2028 and 2034.

This project supports San Francisco’s long-term transit goals by delivering more frequent service, improving travel times, and preparing the network for future growth and innovation.
