Salerno–Reggio Calabria Rail Line Project: Major Excavation Milestone Reached
24.02.2025
Salerno–Reggio Calabria Rail Line Project Begins Major Excavation Phase. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Salerno–Reggio Calabria rail line project marks a new milestone as excavation starts. Engineers and workers push forward construction efforts, ensuring rapid progress for Italy’s high-speed railway.
High-Tech TBM Enhances the Salerno–Reggio Calabria Rail Line Project
Webuild’s consortium leads this high-speed rail expansion on behalf of RFI, driving innovation. The powerful tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Partenope” starts excavating the Saginara Tunnel efficiently.

With a 13.46-meter cutting head and 18 electric motors, “Partenope” ensures continuous operation. This eco-friendly TBM, weighing 4,000 tonnes, maximizes excavation speed, improving tunnel construction reliability.
Italian Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini remotely attended the ignition ceremony with officials. Industry leaders, including Lucio Menta and Nicola Meistro, joined this significant event.
Salerno’s Campagna and Contursi Terme municipalities will benefit from the new 3-kilometer tunnel. Over 100 specialized technicians will operate and maintain the TBM, ensuring its top performance.
Expansion of Italy’s High-Speed Rail Network
Three additional TBMs will soon begin work, excavating eight more tunnels along the route. Two massive twin machines, now in assembly, will play a crucial role in construction.
A fourth TBM, refurbished in Terni after use in Paris, will arrive soon. Webuild’s regeneration efforts reinforce Italy’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure solutions.
Italy plans to deploy 40 TBMs nationwide, supporting multiple high-speed rail projects. Southern regions will see 30 TBMs contribute to vital transportation infrastructure improvements.
This expansion enhances Italy’s railway connectivity, integrating Northern and Southern regions. Over 8,100 jobs have already been created, boosting economic growth and industry innovation.
Lot 1A, led by the Xenia Consortium, spans 35 kilometers of new railway construction. Featuring 20 tunnels and 19 viaducts, it ensures more efficient and reliable train services.
A key part of Italy’s sustainable mobility strategy, this project enhances connectivity. Future rail services will benefit from faster, safer, and environmentally friendly infrastructure upgrades.
