Russian Railways will stop purchasing diesel locomotives
The Russian Railways holding plans to stop purchasing diesel locomotives from 2025. In the future, the company intends to operate electric locomotives, battery rolling stock and locomotives fueled by natural gas or hydrogen, informs Railway Supply magazine citing “Gudok”.

“In the future we plan to operate locomotives with storage batteries, multi-unit rolling stock with hydrogen fuel cells, locomotives with gas piston and gas diesel engines”, – quotes the publication of the Deputy General Director – Chief Engineer of Russian Railways Sergey Kobzev.
According to him, by the end of 2025, 55 rail buses, 1156 electric train railcars and over 2.8 thousand passenger railcars will be replaced with new ones. The company’s estimated need for the purchase of locomotives for this period is 2522 units.
“With the participation of representatives of engineering holdings, technical requirements for locomotives for various purposes have been developed. The starting point for setting the main parameters of the locomotive was an operational model, which describes in detail the existing and future cargo flows, bottlenecks at the sections of the landfill under consideration, options for passing a promising cargo flow, “said Sergey Kobzev.
