A recent tender has been announced for the reconstruction of two key sections of railway infrastructure totaling $1.04 billion, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Tender for railway infrastructure modernization

The first contract includes the design and construction of a 41.6 km stretch from Drobeta-Turnu Severin to Băile Herculane. This project spans six years, with one year allocated to design work.

The cost of this contract amounts to 2.44 billion Romanian Leu.

The second contract covers a 32.6 km section from Băile Herculane to Poarta, costing 2.43 billion Romanian Leu. The completion period for both contracts is also six years.

The primary objective of the modernization is to increase train speeds to 160 km/h over a 225.3 km stretch of the mainline. This will be achieved by reducing gradients to 18%, strengthening bridges to support axle loads of up to 22.5 tons, and aligning loading gauges with international standards.

Additionally, the project includes the installation of modern ETCS Level 2 safety systems, GSM-R radio communication, station upgrades, and sound barriers. These measures aim to enhance safety and efficiency in Romania’s railway transport.

Funding for the project is part of the country’s extensive transport program for 2021-2027, with a total cost of 9.6 billion euros. A significant portion, 4.6 billion euros, is provided by the European Union.

This modernization effort not only improves transport conditions and safety but also contributes to the economic development of regions traversed by the upgraded rail corridors.
