Rome to Receive 121 Trams Under €450 Million Contract
28.04.2025
CAF has signed a contract to supply up to 121 bi-directional trams to Rome worth €450 million. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The framework tender was won by the Spanish manufacturer in the fall of 2023. However, as local media report, competing participant Hitachi Rail challenged the decision in court. The company’s appeal was rejected only last week.

Delivery Delays to Rome
The delivery of the first trams to Rome, initially scheduled for September 2025, has been postponed to June 2026. The delay is due to issues with the supply chain of components, not the legal disputes. This situation has impacted the timelines, but the company is confident it can meet its commitments on time.
How Trams Will Improve Rome’s Infrastructure?
This contract marks an important step in improving Rome’s transport infrastructure. The supplied trams will be equipped with the latest technology, which will enhance passenger comfort and safety. It is expected that this project will significantly improve the quality of public transport in the Italian capital.
Signing the contract will enable Rome to receive a modern transport solution that will effectively serve the city for many years. The delays will not affect the ultimate goal — to provide residents and visitors with a reliable and comfortable transport system.
The legal dispute between CAF and Hitachi Rail delayed the start of deliveries, but the company is now fully focused on fulfilling the contract terms. Rome will receive trams that will help improve infrastructure and make traveling around the city more convenient and safe.
