Romania revives train production after decades of inactivity

The Leon project began in 2011 as an initiative to revive Romania’s rail manufacturing industry. Its historical predecessor, the Malaxa train series, was produced from 1935 to 1942.

The prototype was completed in 2020 by Electroputere VFU, a company specializing in rail vehicle repairs and upgrades. Around 60% of the train’s components were manufactured in Romania.

Romania focuses on localization and private sector involvement

Initially planned for use in the Moldova region, the train is now operated by private company Grampet Group, which also owns the manufacturing plant. This move accelerated the commercial rollout of the project.

The Leon symbolizes Romania’s efforts to reclaim a place in the rail industry and deliver a competitive product for the European market.

By localizing production and relying on private-sector investment, Romania is making a strong comeback as a producer of modern rolling stock.
