The Romanian government has approved the creation of a state-owned railway company to meet the country’s military needs. This decision was made within the framework of a new EU initiative aimed at improving military mobility.

The new railway company will handle strategic transport, ensuring the country can respond quickly when private transport companies either refuse or cannot provide necessary services. This is especially crucial during crises that require rapid mobilization.

Strategic Importance of Romania’s New Railway Company for Military Mobility

Events from 2020–2023 highlighted the need for a reliable state railway operator. This operator must be prepared to transport troops, equipment, and arms for Romania and its strategic partners. The railway company will also play a significant role in delivering humanitarian aid to conflict zones, strengthening international cooperation, and helping prevent crises.

In addition to military tasks, the state railway company will be a key element in the transportation of essential goods. This includes resources such as grain, raw materials, and fuel, helping to prevent potential food or energy crises. At the same time, the company will operate in the freight transport market, complementing existing services and meeting broader market needs.

The European Commission considers military mobility crucial for Europe’s security. EU member state armies must be able to respond swiftly to crises at the EU’s external borders and beyond. Romania is actively participating in the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), reaffirming its commitment to improving military mobility. In 2018, Romania reiterated this commitment at the NATO summit, underscoring the importance of military mobility for national defense.

Earlier, it was reported that Finland and Norway are also enhancing their rail links for military purposes.
