Romania and Moldova to Restore the Railway Route across the Prut

The railway route across the Prut will reconnect Romania and Moldova as both countries have agreed to restore the Cantemir – Falciu section after more than 30 years of inactivity. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The memorandum was signed by national railway companies CFM and CFR. It includes full reconstruction of the bridge, border stations, and installation of dual-gauge tracks — 1520 mm and 1435 mm.

Originally closed in 1992 due to landslides, the historical line is now undergoing revival. The initiative will improve regional connectivity with the European transport network.
Work on the Railway Route across the Prut
According to CFM, Moldova will complete the 1.8 km track section to Prut station by August 2025. The government has allocated $545,000 for this phase.
Romania will simultaneously upgrade its section of the route to ensure uninterrupted movement and faster border crossing procedures.
The dual-gauge track will allow seamless integration with European rail systems, eliminating the need to change rolling stock.
The Railway Route across the Prut to Be Complemented by a Road Bridge
During the memorandum signing, officials also announced the launch of a new road bridge project across the Prut near Ungheni.
The infrastructure, named the “Flower Bridge,” will connect national road networks of Moldova and Romania.
This project is expected to enhance cross-border mobility and strengthen regional economic ties.
