RMT and TfL deal brings pay increases and better conditions

An agreement was drawn up between the union RMT and Transport for London after a period of intense industrial action involving thousands of tube workers. This new agreement includes pay rises that will keep in line with the Retail Price Index.

Under this agreement, employees get an increment of 3.4% retroactive to April, while in the second year, they will get a 3% increment and in the third year, an increment of 2.5%. Through pay increments based on RPI, employees have their incomes increasing regularly.

Additionally, the agreement brings in fatigue-friendly timetables and ongoing talk of benefits related to travel, all of which continue to emphasize a concern for the well-being of staff.

RMT and TfL deal signals broader change in the transport sector

“It’s a decisive victory for organized labor,” said Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of RMT. “It clearly demonstrates that collective action is a powerful means of securing positive change in pay and standards of working.”

Recent strikes by the union have led to a four-day closure of the Underground system in September, thus attracting widespread comments regarding their expressed worries over working hours and fatigue issues. Though proposed changes for a 32-hour workweek have been turned down by TfL, talk has resumed between them and the union.

This is because the RMT covers a diverse number of transportation modes. This deal is likely to spark similar deals across the entire UK. It is worth noticing that basing pay on RPI as opposed to productivity is a clear departure from fairness in wage arrangements.
