Renfe Threatens Talgo with a Multi-Million Euro Fine
09.08.2024
The Spanish national railway company, Renfe, is once again preparing to fine the train manufacturer Talgo, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This time, the reason for the legal actions is the technical issues with the high-speed Avril trains, which are causing inconveniences for both the operator and the passengers.
Argentina: Battery-Powered Tram-Trains Put into Operation
Since the launch of the first ten Avril trains in May, Renfe has repeatedly encountered technical failures in their operation.
The main problems are related to the electrical equipment and the door system. Passengers also frequently complain about increased noise and vibrations inside the carriages. A recent incident has further worsened the situation.
Last Monday, a serious failure occurred in the electrical system of one of the trains.
As a result, 494 passengers were trapped in the carriages without power for more than two hours.
The situation was exacerbated by high temperatures, forcing passengers to break a window to ventilate the carriage.
This latest incident has become the last straw for Renfe, which now intends to take legal action against Talgo.
Spain’s Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, estimated the punctuality of the Avril trains at just 40.7%, significantly lower than the 76.2% for other high-speed trains.
This incident has only added tension to the relationship between Renfe and Talgo.
The operator is already attempting to claim a fine of 166 million euros from the manufacturer for a 3.5-year delay in deliveries.
The current situation threatens the future cooperation between the companies.
