Minnesota Commercial Railway runs about 86 miles of track through the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area. It began operations in 1987 after taking over from Minnesota Transfer Railway.
That transfer followed the withdrawal of former owners like Burlington Northern and Soo Line. Since then, the railway has played a key role in local freight service.
Regional Rail confirmed it does not plan major operational changes. Existing services, staffing, and logistics will continue without disruption under the new ownership.
The Minneapolis-based railway is also popular among enthusiasts for its rare Alco and MLW locomotives. These vintage units offer distinctive visuals and strong performance.
Regional Rail Expands Through Targeted Acquisition
This acquisition highlights Regional Rail’s ongoing efforts to consolidate high-potential short line assets. It also reinforces its commitment to localized service across diverse U.S. regions.
By maintaining Minnesota Commercial’s structure, the company preserves both legacy and efficiency. Customers and employees are expected to benefit from a seamless transition.
Minnesota Commercial Railway Joins Regional Rail Network
As part of this integration, Regional Rail will gain broader access to shippers in a vital metropolitan market. Its expanded footprint enhances connections between the Midwest and East Coast.
With regulatory approval pending, the deal positions Regional Rail to further optimize freight logistics. It also deepens its presence in a region rich in industrial and transportation history.
