Regenerative braking is efficient on the Lviv railway
In 2020, on the Lviv railway, due to the regenerative braking technology, locomotives returned 6.9 million kWh of electricity to the contact network in the amount of UAH 16.9 million. This was reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to the press center of the regional branch of the Lviv Railway, JSC Ukrzalyznytsia.
Due to the unique mountainous landscape, the Lviv highway has additional opportunities to save energy costs when using regenerative braking. This is skillfully implemented by the crews of the locomotive depots in Mukachevo and Lvov-Zapad.
The use of recuperation also saves the technical resources of the rolling stock, if the locomotive uses only pneumatic brakes when descending, then the wear of the wheel pairs and brake pads will become much greater.
The electricity generated by the traction motors, which operate in a generator mode when braking, is returned to the contact network and can be used by other locomotives in this section.
