Northern, the UK’s second-largest train operator, has initiated a recruitment drive for rail engineers. These skilled professionals will maintain and repair trains at TrainCare Centres located in Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester, with salaries reaching up to £50,320 annually. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This expansion aims to bolster Northern’s engineering team responsible for maintaining a fleet of over 340 trains. These trains carry tens of millions of passengers annually across Northern England, operating 2,500 services daily to more than 500 stations.

Key opportunities include maintenance engineer roles at Newton Heath TrainCare Centre in Greater Manchester, starting at £49,681 per year. Positions at Allerton TrainCare Centre in Merseyside offer initial salaries of £37,740, rising to £50,320 after completing mandatory training programs.

Applicants must be over 18, hold an NVQ Level 3 in Engineering, and live within 45 minutes of their desired depot. Rebecca Prendergast, a senior production manager at Newton Heath, encourages women to pursue engineering careers, calling it “incredibly rewarding.”
