The work includes the renovation of 120 km of track, 150 switches, 140 km of overhead contact lines, and the JAT equipment, as well as the modernization of 20 stations and the installation of over 15 km of noise protection walls.
The project’s cost has increased to 1.3 billion euros.
The work will commence with the closure of traffic in early 2024 to avoid issues during the 2024 UEFA European Championship, which will take place in Germany during the summer of 2024.
This project will serve as a pilot and lay the foundation for future DB railway reconstructions.
