The Ministry of Infrastructure expects to complete the full upgrade by the end of 2025. Electrification and acquisition of modern rolling stock are scheduled for 2026, making the system more sustainable and efficient.
Albania Secures Funding for Strategic Railway Project
The total project cost is €92.1 million ($104.9 million). The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is providing a €36.9 million loan, while the European Union is contributing up to €35.5 million in grant aid.
Albania’s government is covering the remaining cost to ensure uninterrupted development. The project includes nine stations, which are set to transform mobility and reduce reliance on road transport.
Infrastructure Minister Belinda Balluku highlighted that the railway will enhance urban transit, reduce congestion, and foster regional economic growth. The new link between Tirana, Durres, and the airport is expected to streamline travel.
Albania aims to align its infrastructure with European standards, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen its position as a transport hub in the Western Balkans.
Construction activities are progressing steadily, and government officials remain confident in meeting the project deadlines. The railway modernization marks a new chapter in Albania’s journey toward sustainable development and European integration.
