Huddersfield Railway Station Upgrade

Huddersfield railway station will close for 30 days from August 30 to allow track and platform remodelling, viaduct reinforcement, and bridge replacement. Engineers will also deliver major signalling upgrades and track renewals to improve reliability.

During the closure, services to Manchester, Leeds, York, Bradford, and Sheffield will face diversions. Passengers should check schedules via National Rail or operator websites before travelling to avoid delays and confusion.

Huddersfield will reopen on September 29 with only three platforms in operation instead of six. This reduced capacity will remain until early 2027, so passengers should prepare for altered service patterns and possible longer journey times.

Deighton Railway Station Redevelopment

Deighton railway station will close on August 30 and reopen in 2027 as a fully modern, step-free facility. The upgrade includes longer platforms, a footbridge with lifts, a redesigned forecourt, and better passenger amenities.

The works will also double the track capacity from two to four lines, allowing faster trains to overtake stopping services, reducing travel times, and increasing route efficiency across the Transpennine network.

From August 30 to September 28, hourly replacement buses will connect Huddersfield, Deighton, Mirfield, Dewsbury, and Wakefield Kirkgate. Afterward, an hourly service will link Huddersfield, Deighton, and Brighouse until the station reopens.

Additional Impacts and Investment

Road closures will support the construction works. In Huddersfield, sections of John William Street, Fitzwilliam Street, and A641 will see partial restrictions. In Deighton, Whitacre Street will close to pedestrians from August 20, and the A62 will shut to vehicles on selected weekends in September and October.

The TRU has invested £100 million in diversionary routes, enabling TransPennine Express to keep passengers moving. Brighouse will be the main interchange for Huddersfield travellers, with buses every 15 minutes.
