24.05.2025
Northeast railroads introduced new summer train schedules this week to meet growing travel demand ahead of Memorial Day and improve access to key destinations. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) began operating its seasonal Cannonball service from Penn Station to Montauk on May 19. The train departs every Thursday at 4:07 p.m. EDT and runs express to Westhampton.

It continues to Southampton, Bridgehampton, Easthampton, and Montauk. LIRR President Rob Free called it the true start of summer. He emphasized the train’s 97% on-time rate and strong ridership numbers.
Summer Schedules Boost Rail Access Across the Northeast
He added that the convenience of these schedules makes rail travel the best choice for reaching Long Island. Travelers avoid traffic while enjoying a direct, scenic route.
Meanwhile, the CapeFLYER resumes service between Boston’s South Station and Cape Cod. Keolis, MBTA, and other agencies partnered to offer Friday through Sunday service through Labor Day.
Holiday weekends will include additional runs to handle higher demand. This roundtrip train service provides a stress-free, car-free way to access Cape Cod.
Seasonal Schedules Improve Holiday Travel Options
Now in its 13th season, CapeFLYER continues to grow in popularity. “It’s reliable, scenic, and simple,” said Kathleen Jensen, acting head of the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority.
Both railroads aim to support tourism, reduce highway congestion, and promote sustainable transportation. Travelers now benefit from flexible, convenient schedules to top summer spots.
As demand increases, these seasonal services make weekend getaways more accessible. Rail operators are enhancing travel efficiency and contributing to local economies.
