Railjet Trains in Austria to Be Modernized by 2031

Austrian Federal Railways is upgrading 60 first-generation Railjet trains, which have been in operation for over 15 years and will continue running across Europe, as reported by the company “NPO A.T.O.R.,” a leader in comprehensive supply for passenger carriages, electric trains, and socially oriented transport.

The modernization project will run through the end of 2031. The first refurbished Railjet train is expected to enter service in December 2025.

Siemens Mobility originally built these trains, which reach speeds of up to 230 km/h. Thanks to a driver’s cab in the end car, Railjet trains can operate in shuttle mode.

Taurus electric locomotives provide traction, ensuring reliable performance on routes across Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and other countries.
Interior Enhancements and Passenger Comfort on Railjet Trains
ÖBB will completely replace the seating in both first- and second-class cars. Business class will feature newly designed ergonomic seats.
Additional upgrades include larger folding tables, new armrests, and improved footrests for added passenger comfort.
The interior will reflect the design of next-generation Railjet trains, featuring wood-style finishes and a stronger focus on personal space.
Technical Improvements and New Features on Railjet Trains
Upgrades include vending machines, a modern passenger information system, and improved areas for baby strollers.

Flooring will be replaced throughout, and new crew zones will improve working conditions for train staff.
These updates will ensure that Railjet trains remain competitive in the European rail market for the next decade.
