Rail Services in Cornwall Improve After Ponts Mill Viaduct Upgrade
19.05.2025
Train journeys through Cornwall are now smoother and more reliable after Network Rail completed a major upgrade of the Ponts Mill viaduct near St Blazey. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The 152-year-old bridge, carrying the Newquay branch line over the River Par, has received structural reinforcements to ensure long-term safety and efficiency. Previously, trains had to slow to 10mph, which increased travel time and fuel use.

Cornwall Rail Project Brings Efficiency Gains
In March, engineers closed the line for extensive works. They removed old timber decks and installed new steel ones. Bridge girders were strengthened, and rails, sleepers, and ballast were fully replaced.
Using two 60-tonne cranes, crews lifted and positioned materials with precision. Now, trains travel at a restored line speed of 30mph without additional slowdowns at the viaduct.
This upgrade benefits both passenger and freight services. Cargo trains serving local mineral sites in Cornwall can now operate more efficiently and consistently across the viaduct.
Cornwall Infrastructure Work Respects Historic Legacy
Steel painting and stonework repairs continue to preserve the viaduct’s historical structure. These final touches will extend its life while maintaining its heritage.
The project not only upgraded the railway but also protected a vital heritage asset. Network Rail thanked local residents for their patience during the prolonged closure.
