Upgrades enhance track efficiency and station access

The South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA) managed upgrades along the West Anglia main line, focusing on 3.5 miles (5.7 km) of track between Shepreth and Cambridge. Realignment work helped prepare the site for a new four-platform station.

As part of the upgrades, eight modern track switches were installed. The team also replaced and improved overhead electric lines to support future operations and meet higher energy efficiency standards.

Keith Sullivan of Network Rail called the work a major milestone. He highlighted the station’s role in serving Trumpington, the biomedical campus, and commuters working near Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Next phase includes signalling upgrades and station fit-out

Cambridge South will become the city’s third station and is expected to relieve pressure on existing routes. It aims to support local economic development and the area’s growing need for fast, reliable rail access.

The upgrades represent a collaboration between Network Rail, Colas Rail UK, and AECOM. Together, they delivered critical improvements on time, supporting infrastructure demands in a region with rising passenger numbers.

Next, signalling upgrades will follow, with completion expected by the end of the year. In parallel, construction teams will finish internal fit-out work to keep the station on schedule for opening.

Thanks to these upgrades, Cambridge is better positioned to handle future transport demand. The station will help connect key employment hubs and promote sustainable growth in public transit usage.

This investment shows the UK’s commitment to modernizing its railways. Improved service, smoother operations, and new connections will benefit residents and businesses across Cambridgeshire.
