Boosting Sustainability with Rail Freight

The Modal Shift Programme, launched in September 2023, incentivizes rail freight for container transportation within 140 miles of Southampton. Customers receive payments for each rail-shipped container, reducing reliance on road transport.

Financed by a small fee on inbound containers, the programme has increased rail freight’s share from 21% to 30%. DP World aims to achieve a 40% share by 2026, further enhancing logistics sustainability.

Expanding Rail Freight Services Across the UK

Over the past year, DP World introduced four new rail freight routes connecting Southampton to Birmingham, Cardiff, Doncaster, and East Midlands Gateway. These services provide customers with flexible, eco-friendly logistics options.

In October, DP World doubled rail capacity between Southampton and London Gateway by launching a second rail service. This improvement could remove up to one million road miles annually, reducing traffic and pollution.

John Trenchard, Vice President at DP World, emphasized the initiative’s success in advancing sustainable logistics. He highlighted the programme’s alignment with DP World’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Satvir Kaur, MP for Southampton Test, praised the scheme for reducing congestion and improving local air quality. She encouraged other businesses to adopt similar measures to combat climate challenges.

Craig Barnes, Director at Supreme Freight Services, shared that the programme inspired his company to prioritize rail freight solutions. They now offer rail-based transport options to their customers.

Operating in 78 countries, DP World integrates logistics, forwarding, and European transport into its global operations. Handling 10% of global trade, the company continues to lead in sustainable logistics advancements.
