RB Rail AS has submitted a funding application to develop railway radio communication infrastructure within Baltic states. Rail Baltica aims to expand digital connectivity, enhancing transport operations and passenger experience.

Rail Baltica’s 5G Infrastructure Development Strategy

The initiative aligns with the CEF-Digital program’s goal to expand 5G coverage along transport corridors. The proposal focuses on building passive infrastructure along the Rail Baltica mainline, improving network capabilities.

This development will support the European Transport Network (TEN-T) and ensure compliance with the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). Implementing FRMCS-compliant systems enhances railway operations and strengthens regional connectivity.

Impact of Rail Baltica’s Connectivity Expansion

Marius Narmontas, COO and Vice-Chairperson at RB Rail AS, emphasized the project’s importance for digital transformation. He stated that deploying this infrastructure is essential for modern railway systems.

Rail Baltica routes pass through areas with limited network coverage, requiring advanced 5G solutions. The new infrastructure will bridge connectivity gaps, benefiting logistics and surrounding communities.

The project includes designing radio coverage, constructing towers, and installing dark fiber for communication support. A total of 99 radio towers will be built, ensuring stable connectivity across key transport routes.

Approximately 297 km of the Baltic railway network will receive upgraded communication systems. These developments will improve operational efficiency and foster economic growth through enhanced digital access.

Estonia will host multiple local connection points supporting seamless data transmission. This initiative enhances digital infrastructure, ensuring a modernized transport network across all participating countries.
