Purple Line light rail vehicles support testing and commissioning

The final vehicle in the 28-strong Purple Line light rail vehicles fleet arrived in Maryland ahead of schedule, according to a press release from the Maryland Transit Administration. This early arrival allows the project team to continue testing and commissioning activities along the full alignment, and this final Purple Line light rail vehicle delivery means trials can now be run with the complete set of LRVs.

Purple Line Senior Project Director Ray Biggs II said this milestone reflects the significant Purple Line progress made in 2025 and that each step brings the region closer to a more accessible and better-connected transit network under the Maryland Transit Administration. This focus on incremental progress and regional connectivity also appears in wider coverage of the scheme by Railway Supply.

CAF Purple Line LRVs assembled in Elmira, New York

The LRV delivered on 19 November completes the order of 28 CAF light rail vehicles for the Purple Line project. Each trainset measures 142 feet in length and can carry up to 430 passengers, including seating for 80 people. The vehicles can accommodate up to eight wheelchairs and include eight bike racks, giving riders options for first- and last-mile journeys.

These CAF Purple Line LRVs are manufactured and assembled in Elmira, New York. After each vehicle reaches Maryland, it goes through a structured commissioning and testing programme before being cleared to enter service on the Purple Line light rail system.
