Progress Rail to modernize a battery-powered locomotive in Australia
06.06.2023
The basis for the modernization will be the narrow-gauge locomotive GT42CU AC
The work will be carried out upon the request of the freight carrier Aurizon, which expects the project to enable the locomotive to travel up to 400 km on a single charge and up to 850 km with an attached battery tender, as reported by the railway journal Railway Supply, citing Progress Rail.
The foundation for the modernization will be the narrow-gauge locomotive GT42CU AC, originally produced by Australian company EDi Rail (now Downer Rail) under a license from the American EMD in the early 2000s.

Instead of a diesel engine and fuel tank, lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 4.5 MWh will be installed. The project also involves a comprehensive refurbishment of the engineer’s cab, bogies, and traction motors. Additionally, a new control system, inverters, and compressors will be installed.
It is expected that the modernization will be completed at the Redbank depot in Australia, along with the construction of the charging infrastructure, by the beginning of 2025. Afterward, operational testing will commence.
The project is based on Progress Rail’s experience in manufacturing the EMD Joule series of battery locomotives.
