Progress Rail Invests in Environmental Development of ENR

The contracts between Progress Rail and the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) cover a total of 141 locomotives. These agreements are set for 15 years and involve not only equipment upgrades but also technical support.

The modernization will extend the locomotives’ service life by up to 20 years. Specialists will replace the power units and control systems, which will reduce fuel consumption and lower harmful emissions.

Collaboration with Progress Rail Strengthens the Locomotive Fleet

The AA22T series remains the most widely used in Egypt. These locomotives have been produced since the 1970s by the German company Henschel under license, with diesel engines from EMD — now a subsidiary of Progress Rail.

ENR is focusing on upgrading its existing fleet rather than purchasing new equipment. This decision helps reduce costs and achieve faster results.

The modernized locomotives will meet current standards for efficiency and environmental friendliness. As a result, Egypt will receive a modern fleet without replacing the entire park.

Progress Rail not only handles the technical upgrades but also long-term servicing. This ensures the stable operation of the locomotives for decades.

Thus, cooperation with the American manufacturer has opened the way for Egypt to modernize its railway sector without significant costs.
