Progress Rail, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Corporation, has signed a new contract with Indonesian state operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) for the maintenance of 35 EMD GT38AC locomotives, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The contract between Progress Rail and PT KAI is not the first; the companies have been collaborating for over ten years.
The first contract was signed in September 2013 and provided for the maintenance and repair of 50 locomotives built by Progress Rail.
Later, this contract was expanded to include the maintenance of five more locomotives. In 2020, the parties agreed to extend the contract to maintain 55 locomotives, including major overhauls of the bogies and the locomotives themselves at 12-year intervals.
The conclusion of a new contract for the maintenance of 35 locomotives confirms the high level of trust and mutually beneficial cooperation between Progress Rail and PT KAI.

Both companies strive to maintain a high level of operational readiness of the rolling stock, which is a crucial element for the stable and efficient operation of Indonesia’s railway network.
In February 2024, Progress Rail signed another significant contract with PT KAI for the supply of 54 new EMD GT38AC locomotives.
This delivery will strengthen Progress Rail’s position in the Indonesian railway technology market and allow PT KAI to expand and modernize its locomotive fleet.
The EMD GT38AC is a modern locomotive equipped with advanced technologies, characterized by high performance and reliability.
Its operation in South Sumatra, as well as subsequent maintenance and repairs conducted by Progress Rail specialists, will ensure the smooth functioning of railway transport in the region.
Thus, the new agreement between Progress Rail and PT KAI underscores the strategic importance of long-term partnership in the field of railway transport and rolling stock maintenance.
These measures are expected to improve the quality of rail transport in Indonesia, contributing to economic development and enhancing the country’s infrastructure.
