Progress Rail has completed testing of the first EMD Joule battery locomotive for use in the USA
21.03.2024
The six-axle 2400 kW SD40JR successfully underwent final tests at the MxV Rail center in Pueblo, USA, and will soon be delivered to PHL for shunting operations at California ports, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This locomotive will be the first in the country to operate solely on battery power.
Express Service OOD has signed a contract for the delivery of 9 ES3000 battery locomotives
The SD40JR is equipped with an asynchronous traction drive with axle-by-axle traction force control.
The maximum speed is stated to be 80 km/h, with a starting traction force of 600 kN and a continuous traction force of 416 kN.
Specialized stationary charging stations have been developed to provide the locomotive with energy. According to Progress Rail representatives, a full battery charge takes less than 4 hours, providing enough charge for 24 hours of continuous operation.
The EMD Joule battery model was introduced by Progress Rail in 2020, and PHL was one of the first customers for this product.
The EMD Joule lineup includes 5 different versions, allowing customers to choose the optimal option based on their needs.
This advancement in the development of rail transport in the USA is seen as an important step towards reducing emissions and increasing energy efficiency.
