29.09.2023
The State Technical Railway Inspection of Latvia has approved the construction project of the infrastructure in the vicinity of the city of Iecava, which is part of the future Rail Baltica railway, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
This section marks the first in Latvia where design work has been completed outside of Riga.
The project is being carried out by a consortium of Latvian and Italian companies, BRD projects, with the participation of the Italian engineering company Sintagma.

Coordination of the work is being managed by the Latvian company Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas (EDZL).
According to information from EDZL, a priority is the construction of the Rail Baltica section from Riga to the Lithuanian border.
Construction of this section is expected to commence in 2023 from the base in Iecava, where storage and handling of construction materials, equipment, and machinery will also be organized.
The Iecava base will cover an area of approximately 16 hectares.
The plan is to lay standard gauge tracks of 1435 mm over a length of about 14 kilometers, including connections to the existing 1520 mm gauge railway network for transporting equipment and materials from seaports.
Once the company is selected through an international tender, Latvia will begin preparations for the construction of this Rail Baltica railway, with secured funding amounting to 165 million euros for the initial phase.
Within the Rail Baltica project, Latvia will build two stations to serve international trains and an additional 16 stations of regional significance. Apart from Iecava, another infrastructure base is planned in the vicinity of the Skulte station.
