The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB-Infrastruktur) have submitted the project for constructing a new railway line from Vienna Airport to Bruck an der Leitha for an environmental assessment, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Vienna Airport Railway Project Undergoes Environmental Assessment

This double-track electrified line, spanning 26 kilometers, is intended to improve transportation between Vienna and the eastern regions of Lower Austria, as well as the northern areas of Burgenland.

Additionally, the project will provide direct rail access to Vienna Airport for cities in Hungary.

The Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK) is expected to make a decision on the environmental assessment of the project in 2026.

If the assessment is favorable, construction of the line will begin in 2027 and could be completed by 2034.

One significant aspect of the project is the potential reduction in short-haul flights due to the connection of Vienna Airport with the European railway network via Bruck an der Leitha.

The project’s history dates back to 2015, with the final route featuring four stations agreed upon in 2021.

Part of the line will run underground, including the Enzersdorf an der Fischa station.

The travel time between the airport and the district center of Bruck an der Leitha will be 15 minutes, significantly improving transportation for residents and visitors to the region.

The environmental assessment is a crucial phase in the project’s implementation, as it will evaluate the impact on the environment and develop measures to minimize any potential negative effects.

Designing and constructing new railway lines requires careful consideration of environmental factors, such as the impact on local flora and fauna, air and water quality, and noise levels.

Implementing new infrastructure projects like this one demonstrates Austria’s commitment to sustainable development and improving the country’s transport system.

Enhancing rail connections not only reduces the burden on road and air routes but also helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions, which is vital in the fight against climate change.

The new railway line project also holds significant economic importance, as it will improve regional accessibility and potentially stimulate economic development.

Convenient and fast transportation connections foster tourism growth, business development, and attract investments.

The project to build a new railway line between Vienna Airport and Bruck an der Leitha represents an important step toward improving Austria’s transport infrastructure.

Its implementation will not only enhance connections between regions but also achieve the country’s environmental goals and stimulate economic growth.

It is essential that all stages of the project, including the environmental assessment, are carried out with due attention to preserving the natural environment and the interests of the local population.
