Taichung Metro Project: New Contracts for the Automated Line

In Taichung, contracts have been signed for the second metro line project. The new project involves the construction of a fully automated 24.8-kilometer line. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Equipment Supply for Taichung Metro
The consortium of ST Engineering, Alstom, CTCI, and Hyundai Rotem has been awarded a contract worth 60.8 billion new Taiwan dollars (1.9 billion USD). This project will supply the necessary equipment for the automated metro line.

Project Implementation for Taichung Metro
The launch of Taichung’s second metro line is planned for 2034. Work is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the entire project set for completion by 2039. This is expected to significantly improve the city’s transport infrastructure.
As part of the contract, ST Engineering will be responsible for project management and system integration. Alstom will provide the train control system, while Hyundai Rotem will supply rolling stock worth 289 million USD.
The existing Green Line, which also serves Taichung, saw an average of 42,800 passengers per day in 2024. It is expected that by 2025, passenger traffic will increase to 49,000 passengers daily.
The project will greatly enhance passenger transport and contribute to the development of the city’s infrastructure.
