The procurement has been split into three specialized contracts to supply varied machine types for different functions. HS2 Ltd has allocated $76M for general infrastructure maintenance machines. These modular machines will adapt easily to specific tasks, enabling efficient maintenance by altering attachments or configurations as required.

The general maintenance machines will handle essential activities, including replacing catenary wires, operational cables, and track components. They will also automate railhead conditioning, inspect bridges, maintain tunnels, and clean platform doors. This procurement enhances HS2’s operational readiness, ensuring smooth, consistent upkeep across the entire network.

The second contract, valued at $16M, focuses on acquiring infrastructure monitoring machines. These machines will support HS2’s asset condition monitoring suite, allowing for precise, autonomous inspections of vital infrastructure assets. Monitoring will employ both unmanned and remote methods to quickly identify issues and streamline solutions. This process, supplemented by mobile infrastructure monitoring within passenger trains, enables real-time condition analysis.

The final $16M contract covers track access machines, essential for safe maintenance while allowing for line access. These machines will transport maintenance staff and equipment, reducing manual handling and cutting down on road travel. By centralizing on-site logistics, HS2 ensures efficient, coordinated infrastructure maintenance across all high-speed rail sections.

Each contract includes the design, manufacture, testing, commissioning, and delivery of machinery, along with warranties, defect corrections, and extensive operator training. The contracts are expected to last for 36 months, with HS2 reserving an option to acquire additional machines valued at $16M if required, thus bringing the full project budget to $124M.

HS2 Ltd invites interested suppliers to submit their bids by January 10, 2025. Successful bidders will be notified by May 9, 2025, with contracts starting soon after. Through this comprehensive procurement, HS2 Ltd aims to uphold resilient, state-of-the-art maintenance across its high-speed railway infrastructure.
