The European Investment Bank allocates SEK 1.75 billion ($170 million) for the acquisition of 25 new X80 model electric trains from Alstom to Sweden’s national operator SJ, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
These trains will replace existing ones on daytime routes and will operate between Stockholm, Malmö, Västerås, and Uppsala starting in 2026.
The X80 trains will be the country’s first with a maximum speed of 250 km/h.
One of the key requirements is their functionality at temperatures below -40°C.
In addition, SJ will modernize the X2000 and double-decker electric trains for regional transportation.
The overall cost of the fleet upgrade program is estimated at SEK 20 billion ($1.94 billion).
