Supply of High-Speed Hybrid Trains for the United Kingdom
11.11.2023
CAF, the Spanish train manufacturing company, has entered into a contract with the British operator LNER to supply 10 hybrid trains for operation on the East Coast Main Line, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
These trains will be capable of utilizing overhead wires, batteries, or diesel generators. The commencement dates for their operation will be announced at a later time.
Stadler paves the way for faster ETCS deployment in Germany
Manufactured at the CAF factory in Wales, these ten-car trains will be equipped with on-board control systems of the ETCS traffic management system.
An important aspect is the use of battery packs to power the trains on non-electrified sections and in environmentally sensitive areas.
The contract also includes an 8-year technical maintenance period, extendable if necessary. All of these measures align with LNER’s strategy to reduce emissions.
The operator has already reduced harmful emissions by 50% compared to the 2018/2019 levels, and the new trains aim to further decrease them by 67% by the year 2035.
This contract solidifies CAF’s position in the British market, where the company is already supplying diesel trains.
Previously, West Midlands Railway and Transport for Wales had introduced CAF’s Civity trains into operation, highlighting the demand for the Spanish manufacturer’s products in the United Kingdom.
