Key upgrades include replacing 12,000 ties and one mile of wye track along the rail system. Additionally, the port will install heavier-duty tracks along three miles of elevated curves, enhancing train capacity.
The rail line, vital for Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway, handles 1.3 million tons of freight annually. These improvements aim to bring the track to Class II standards, enabling speeds up to 25 mph.
How Port of Benton Will Improve Freight Efficiency
The Port of Benton’s southern connection rail line supports regional freight transportation, making this grant critical. Faster train speeds will reduce intersection blockage times from 18 to just 4 minutes.
“This will greatly enhance public safety by reducing delays for emergency vehicles,” said Diahann Howard. The project also shortens vehicle wait times, improving overall transportation flow in the community.
Expanded Facilities Strengthen Port of Benton’s Economic Role
The Port of Benton recently finalized a land transfer for intermodal facility expansion. This new facility will improve freight handling and support future growth in Richland.
“The intermodal site positions us to meet rising freight demands while boosting economic opportunities,” officials explained. These strategic investments ensure the port’s long-term success and sustainability.
By securing this federal grant, the Port of Benton demonstrates its dedication to regional development. Enhanced infrastructure will streamline operations, reduce delays, and strengthen economic growth in Washington state.
