Budimex has completed a major project to improve railway access to the port of Gdynia, which will significantly enhance the transport capabilities of this important Polish maritime hub. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Port modernization

The total project cost was PLN 1.9 billion, part of which was funded by the European Union under the CEF “Connecting Europe” initiative. This project will increase the port’s capacity and speed up logistics operations.

Under the contract, Budimex carried out a complete modernization of the Gdynia port railway station, as well as adjacent infrastructure facilities and railway lines. As a result of the modernization, freight trains up to 750 meters in length will now be able to enter the port, improving transport services and increasing capacity. As part of the reconstruction, 115 kilometers of tracks were upgraded, and 359 switches were installed, which will improve the overall condition of the region’s transport infrastructure.

Completion of all project works is expected soon. Budimex representatives report that a system of 39 railway tracks was created, making this contract the largest in the company’s history. This was stated by Piotr Chuprin, Budimex’s Director of Contacts. The works also included the construction of new viaducts and the reconstruction of roads, which further improved the port’s transport network.

In addition, 13 kilometers of roads, a railway bridge, and 25 railway and road crossings were reconstructed. During the work, two new railway viaducts were built, along with the Local Control Center building, two railway stations, and a new PKP Cargo office building. This became an important part of the efforts to improve infrastructure and develop Poland’s transport sector.

Dariusz Taraszkiewicz, Director of District 1 Budimex SA Railway Construction, noted that the modernization of the railway hub increased the capacity of trains by almost five times. This opens new prospects for investors and transport companies, as well as strengthens strategic connections in Polish ports on the international stage.
