Griffin 200 Electric Locomotive: A Polish Rail Revolution
26.09.2023
Polish industry, passengers, and railway enthusiasts have long awaited an electric locomotive capable of pulling trains at speeds of 200 km/h. Thanks to Newag and an order from PKP Intercity, that locomotive has finally arrived, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply
On the second day of Trako 2023, the much-anticipated premiere took place, as reported by RK.
Newag unveiled the ready-to-go multisystem locomotive, Griffin 200, with plans to build 15 of them for PKP Intercity.
In a few years, these electric locomotives will be operating in international trains, but by the second half of 2024, they will be seen on domestic routes in Poland.

“At the moment, two locomotives are ready, and a third one is under construction. We have tested the vehicles under the voltage of the domestic network, and we have many tests ahead of us, which we will conduct both in Poland and abroad. We are very proud of them,” said Józef Michalik, Vice President of Newag.
“I am proud to present to you a Polish product, manufactured in the city of Nowy Sącz, with a propulsion system, converter, and inverters also being Polish. The significant strength of our electric locomotive is that it is two tons lighter than the lightest two-axle locomotives of this type, thanks to the installation of a very light transformer,” said Zbigniew Konieczek, President of Newag.
Griffin 200 secured the first place in the Ernest Malinowski Competition, which is held during Trako without fail.
The train drivers who will be the first to operate the new Griffin will be better equipped to talk about its traction capabilities. However, it should be noted that the cabin equipment, attention to detail, and quality of finishing are on par with the products of Western competitors of Newag.
This locomotive, measuring nearly 20 meters, weighs 89 tons. It has a power output of 5720 kW, with a maximum power of 6500 kW. The starting tractive effort is 310 kN, and at its highest speed, it’s 115.2 kN, thanks to four traction motors.
The locomotive features pneumatic and electrodynamic brakes and can operate in a double traction configuration. The front part of the locomotive has been dynamically enhanced with the installation of new headlight casings.
