Poland Launches New Locomotive Projects for Domestic and Export Markets
19.06.2025
Polish companies Pesa and FPS have launched large-scale locomotive projects aimed at upgrading rolling stock for Poland and other European countries. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Gama 3.0 Locomotive Projects Expand Pesa’s Export Potential
Pesa has already begun assembling the first prototypes of electric locomotives based on the Gama 3.0 platform. This lineup continues the series introduced in 2012.

The locomotive projects include both passenger and freight models. These units are powered by overhead catenary systems and offer multi-system capability.
Engineers also included options for auxiliary low-power diesel engines or onboard batteries. This ensures flexibility on non-electrified rail sections.
The top speed for Gama 3.0 will increase to 200–230 km/h. To achieve this, the bogies and body structure will be significantly redesigned.
The company plans to supply the new electric locomotives not only to Poland but also to the Czech Republic, Romania, and Bulgaria. This was confirmed by Sales Director Piotr Rosciszewski.
FPS Reintroduces Six-Axle Diesel Locomotives as a New Project
At the same time, FPS announced its intention to revive production of six-axle diesel locomotives. The project builds on designs from the 1980s, reengineered for modern requirements.
FPS President Grzegorz Kucia stated that development is now in the stage of market analysis and technical planning. Mass production may take at least two years.
The new locomotives are expected to deliver power ranging from 2.5 to 3 MW. Additional technical specifications have not yet been disclosed.
As FPS and Pesa focus on different segments, their locomotive projects complement one another, strengthening Poland’s position in the railway engineering industry.
