In the second phase, seven private operators will receive grants totaling €21.8 million. This decision highlights the importance of rail transport as an environmentally friendly means of transportation. The financial support aims to encourage the redistribution of freight in favor of rail.
The railway freight operators selected to receive the grants include companies like Captrain España, Continental Rail, and others. This shows the growing role of the private sector in developing railway freight transport. Each operator will receive funding based on their performance during 2023.
In 2023, these companies managed to transport 4,053 million net tonne-kilometers of freight. This is a significant achievement for the freight transport sector. It is important to note that the size of each grant will be determined based on these results.
Growth in railway freight operators through government programs
The grant program consists of three phases, giving operators the chance to steadily develop their activities. In the first phase, which ended in late 2022, eight operators already received €26.1 million.
Everyone is now awaiting the decision on the third phase, which promises to allocate €23.5 million based on 2024 results. These funds will also be distributed among private operators according to their transportation achievements.
