Double-decker electric trains to modernize long-distance fleet

The tender process began in autumn 2024, and official invitations for bids were issued in spring 2025. Both manufacturers have a proven track record in building double-decker electric trains, intensifying competition for the contract.
Alstom’s offer includes delivery for approximately $966.5 million and maintenance for $655 million. Stadler’s bid proposes a lower delivery price of $941 million, but a higher maintenance cost of around $772 million.
Double-decker electric trains to serve key Polish corridors
PKP Intercity plans to operate the new double-decker electric trains on routes connecting Warsaw with major cities such as Gdańsk, Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, Białystok, Terespol, and Olsztyn. The first trains are expected to enter service within 3.5 years of signing the contract.
Each train will accommodate at least 480 passengers. Coaches will feature reclining seats with personal tables, footrests, armrests, and adjustable lighting and air-conditioning. Passengers will also have access to free Wi‑Fi, USB ports, electrical outlets, digital information displays, vending machines, catering zones, and spaces for bicycles and large luggage.
Both manufacturers operate facilities in Poland: Alstom has a historic plant in Chorzów dating back to 1864, while Stadler has produced double-decker trains in Siedlce since 2007. Local manufacturing will boost domestic industry and reduce supply chain costs.
