25.03.2025
Polish operator PKP Intercity signed a deal to build the PKP Intercity depot in Warsaw. The agreement engages TRAKCJA SA and DB Projekt Sp. z o. o. consortium. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The consortium will construct the facility on the Warsaw-Grochów railway line for over $47 million. PKP Intercity targets completing this major project, costing 179 million zlotys, by 2027.

Engineers will design and construct the depot, improving train traffic control systems for better performance. Additionally, they will create a rolling stock diagnostics station to boost maintenance.
President Janusz Malinowski highlighted the demand for modern facilities to support their expanding fleet. “We currently depend on a historic depot from 1937-1938 in Warsaw,” he noted.
PKP Intercity Depot Features Advanced Technology
The new depot will offer three electrified tracks and cutting-edge inspection platforms for workers. Moreover, it will boast overhead cranes and a 5,500-square-meter operational area.
A 10-ton crane will speed up wheel replacements, enhancing service efficiency and reliability. Also, a specialized stand will measure wheel pressure directly on the tracks.
PKP Intercity actively upgrades its locomotive fleet to meet growing transport needs effectively. Last year, the company acquired 63 Griffin multi-system electric locomotives from Newag.
Previously, PKP Intercity secured a contract with Newag for 46 additional locomotives in 2023. So, the operator now manages over 400 locomotives as of 2024.
PKP Intercity Depot Drives Rail Innovation
The new facility will optimize maintenance, ensuring the fleet performs at top levels consistently. Consequently, this investment bolsters Poland’s railway infrastructure for future growth.
Construction advances as PKP Intercity pursues its modernization goals across the network swiftly. Thus, the Warsaw project marks a vital step in improving service quality.
Polish railways gain from these enhancements, fostering economic growth and sustainable transport options. Furthermore, the initiative reflects PKP Intercity’s dedication to innovation and excellence.
Experts forecast the depot will increase efficiency, cutting locomotive downtime noticeably soon. Hence, travelers can anticipate better reliability on Poland’s busy rail routes shortly.
PKP Intercity continues partnering with industry leaders to deliver state-of-the-art railway infrastructure. And this development establishes the operator as a leader in European rail transport.
