Phú Quốc island metro PPP project is now taking shape, with Vietnamese authorities opting for a build-operate-transfer public-private partnership on the island — a choice recently detailed by Railway Gazette.

In practical terms, the scheme is meant to ease road congestion, reduce emissions and steer Phú Quốc toward more sustainable urban growth and tourism.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Route and scope of the Phú Quốc island metro PPP project

In a recent decision, the People’s Council of An Giang Province has cleared the way for a 9 trillion dong metro scheme structured as a build-operate-transfer concession that could run for up to 40 years. As previously noted by Railway Supply, the future 17·7 km line is to connect Phú Quốc International Airport with the APEC Conference Centre, with plans for five to seven stations and a single depot along the route.

Most of the tracks are expected to lie at ground level, while 1·3 km will be carried on elevated structures and another 2 km will run underground in tunnel.

Trains, speeds and opening timeline

Planners envisage electric trains made up of three to five cars, designed for maximum operating speeds of 70 to 100 km/h. The Vietnamese Government Portal VGP also stresses that work should start before the end of this year, with the aim of opening the line in the second quarter of 2027 — just in time for Phú Quốc to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit and to support more sustainable tourism on the island.
