The project includes complete engine replacement and bench testing. The total duration is set at 2.5 years, with no more than 140 days allocated per locomotive.

The contract covers MTU 16V 4000 R84 engines manufactured by Germany’s MTU, a Rolls-Royce Group company. These power units were installed in SU160 passenger diesel locomotives produced by Pesa in 2015.

Ten such locomotives were delivered that year. In 2023, Pesa had already completed similar repairs on two units, initiating efforts to resolve technical issues.

From the outset, SU160s exhibited a high failure rate. According to Pesa, over 80% of these breakdowns were caused by design flaws in the diesel engines.

However, the engine manufacturer attributes the problems to improper servicing in unauthorized depots, which allegedly fail to follow maintenance standards.

Pesa Aims to Improve SU160 Fleet Reliability

PKP Intercity is counting on improved reliability, as these locomotives continue serving key passenger routes across Poland. The new agreement is expected to reduce downtime and restore trust in the series.

Pesa has already begun preparations: repair teams are formed, and component deliveries are underway. The first overhauled engines will soon undergo testing before returning to service.

PKP Intercity Deal Strengthens Pesa’s Market Position

This project highlights Pesa’s commitment to technical excellence. Collaboration with a national operator strengthens the company’s market position and paves the way for future contracts.

By focusing on quality and long-term partnerships, the Polish manufacturer reinforces its standing in the rail industry.
