Pesa Signs Agreement for Rolling Stock Sale to Romania

The Romanian Railway Reform Authority has selected the Polish rolling stock manufacturer PESA to supply 20 new EMU Inter-Regio/REIR trains with an option for nine more.

The company outbid Alstom for the contract worth 1 billion PLN (230 million USD) and also expects to win another tender for the supply of 62 EMU Regio/RE-R trains with a 15-year vehicle maintenance contract.

The 3-car EMUs, to be designated as 655-6 and 655-5s, will be powered by a 25 kV AC overhead catenary system and can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, offering 192 seats in first and second-class carriages.

The first of these trains is expected to be delivered in 2025.

Pesa reports that after the successful bid for the 20-train contract, the official confirmation of the second agreement is now awaited, which would bring the total value of the contracts to 4 billion PLN.

If successful, this will be the largest order for the Polish company after other recent successes in the Czech Republic, supplying 655-3 trains to the Czech operator RegioJet.

In addition to expanding its presence in the Baltic, Adriatic, and Black Sea countries (areas covered by the Three Seas Initiative), Pesa is also seeking to expand its operations in many foreign markets as part of its Pesa 2030+ strategy.

The contract is the latest in a series of agreements to upgrade the rolling stock and modernize Romania’s railway network, including a recent deal with Alstom to perform modernization work on the signaling and electrification of the Cluj-Napoca-Oradea line.
