The contract, valued at approximately $660 million, includes the delivery of 62 regional electric trains by early 2027, along with a 15-year maintenance and service package.

Funding is partially provided by the EU Modernisation Fund, contributing $510 million, while the rest comes from Romania’s national budget.

PESA Electric Train: Configuration and Features

Each electric train will consist of three cars and accommodate up to 224 passengers. The layout includes designated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility and large luggage storage.

The trains will be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, ensuring compliance with EU standards and integration with the continental rail network.

Electric Train Delivered Early: Project Implementation Begins

Under the contract signed in January 2024, the first electric train was expected within 24 months.

However, PESA delivered it in May 2025—seven months ahead of schedule—enabling Romania to launch its rolling stock modernization earlier than planned.

In addition to train deliveries, PESA will build three service centers across Romania to support maintenance and repair activities.

This initiative aims to improve the quality of regional rail transport, enhance passenger comfort, and ensure alignment with EU environmental regulations.

By 2027, Romania expects to receive the remaining 61 trains, significantly revitalizing its rail infrastructure.
