PESA, which recently sold its first hydrogen shunting locomotive, the SM42-6Dn Hydrogen, to the Orlen group (Lotos Kolej), may have opportunities for additional orders of zero-emission locomotives.
Interest in the SM42-6Dn Hydrogen is expected to grow, as purchasers may be eligible for co-funding through special programs, such as the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
This fund supports local authorities in replacing state-owned rolling stock with low-emission vehicles (battery and hydrogen-powered).
With increased production, the price of hydrogen locomotives can be reduced to around 20 million Polish zlotys compared to traditional locomotives.
The SM42-6Dn Hydrogen represents a significant step in this direction.
The company from Bydgoszcz is actively working on a zero-emission drive for the Pesa Regio 160, which will be a hybrid of electric battery and hydrogen.
The train will draw power from the overhead lines or rechargeable batteries during operation, including energy generated from regenerative braking, as well as hydrogen fuel cells.
