The First Double-Decker Train by CRRC in Canada
27.06.2024
At the end of June 2024, Canada introduced its first double-decker train, manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This six-car push-pull train is the first of 38 planned cars expected to be in service by summer 2025.
According to Exo, local production in Canada accounted for 30%. Twelve local suppliers participated in the project, producing components such as doors, windows, seats, bellows, and control systems.
The production contract was signed in 2017 and included a 2019 option to produce 36 intermediate and 8 leading cars for a total of $150.8 million.
However, the project faced several difficulties. The Covid-19 pandemic, changes in technical documentation, and government requirements to increase localization levels led to the first delivery delay of nearly three years, from June 2019 to February 2022.
Then, communication issues between the cars, caused by deficiencies from a Canadian supplier, added more than a year of delay.
It is worth noting that due to similar delays, CRRC already lost one of its contracts for the supply of double-decker cars in the United States.
Nevertheless, the introduction of the first double-decker train in Canada can be considered a significant step forward despite all the difficulties.
The innovation is eagerly anticipated by passengers and transport experts alike.
Double-decker trains promise to increase passenger capacity and improve travel comfort, which is particularly relevant for densely populated regions.
Experts believe that this project could serve as a model for implementing similar solutions in other parts of the country.
