This event marks a new stage in the development of the transport infrastructure of the two countries, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing travel time for both passenger and freight trains.
The main advantage of the new border crossing is that all border checks are carried out at the Montenegrin Bijelo Polje station, eliminating the need for additional checks at the Vrbnica station on the Serbian side of the border.
This arrangement significantly speeds up the border crossing process.
For passenger trains, time savings of up to 30 minutes are expected, and for freight trains — up to 60 minutes or more.
This not only improves passenger service quality but also promotes faster and more efficient movement of goods between the countries.
The modernization of the Bijelo Polje station, which became a key element of the new border crossing, was completed in May 2023.
The implementation of this project was made possible thanks to funding of 2.1 million euros provided by the European Union under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance.
This project is part of a broader program for the modernization of railway infrastructure in the region, aimed at improving connections between the Western Balkan countries and the European Union.
The opening of the joint border crossing in Bijelo Polje is an important step towards the integration of the transport systems of Serbia and Montenegro.
It contributes to strengthening economic ties between the countries, improving conditions for trade and tourism, and enhancing border security.
This project is also an example of successful cooperation between the Western Balkan countries and the European Union, aimed at developing regional infrastructure and improving conditions for economic growth and social stability.
Thus, the opening of the new railway border crossing in Bijelo Polje is a significant event for Serbia and Montenegro, which contributes to accelerating train movement, improving transport infrastructure, and strengthening cooperation between the countries.
