The work includes relocating utilities, constructing roads and bridges, managing grade separations, and installing sidewalks and traffic signals along an 8.7-mile corridor. This infrastructure will support a modern, reliable transit network.

Once completed, the Hamilton LRT will connect about 50,000 commuters to the Hamilton Street Railway and GO Transit systems, offering seamless access to bus and commuter rail services.

Ontario Lays Groundwork for Major Transit Expansion

The route will include 17 stops, with key destinations such as McMaster University, City Hall, Hamilton Stadium, Eastgate Square, and the downtown core. This alignment will serve the city’s main residential and business districts.

Ontario and the federal government are jointly funding the project with a $3.4 billion commitment. The investment reflects their focus on expanding sustainable transit infrastructure and supporting long-term urban growth.

Ontario Advances Transit Goals with Strategic Investments

This RFP marks a critical step toward realizing Ontario’s broader vision for efficient public transportation. The selected contractor will handle complex engineering challenges and prepare the route for full system integration.

Proposals from bidding teams will outline their construction strategies, with a final selection expected after a thorough evaluation process. Ontario aims to begin construction soon after the contractor is chosen.

Through this initiative, Ontario is setting the stage for a more connected, accessible, and resilient transit system that supports Hamilton’s future development.
